After the success of Saint Omer in last year’s Festival, here’s a chance to catch Alice Diop’s earlier documentary which journeys into the diversity of the Parisian suburbs, following in the tracks of the RER B train route. She presents a series of vignettes of life in the suburbs and the surrounding countryside. But as it gains momentum, this deceptively cunning documentary sees those parallel tracks converge and criss-cross unexpectedly, throwing off fascinating intellectual sparks of insight at the switching points. Diop challenges the traditional ideas of how a documentary should be organised.
