How Can We Make French Grammar Less Complex?

Our students often say that French grammar is too complicated, and sometimes, they give up.

Yet, grammar plays a key role in learning French as a foreign language, and there are many ways to teach it. Between the strictness of prescriptive (or traditional) grammar, the communicative approach focused on usage, phraseological grammar based on authentic expressions, and the task-based and inductive approach that builds knowledge from context—how can we navigate these different methodologies?

This presentation invites us to take a step back to better understand these various approaches, their principles, strengths, and limitations. Through concrete and practical examples, we will explore how these different types of grammar can complement each other to enhance both the learning and teaching of French.
