‘Missing matter’ is what we search out, document, contextualize, debate, teach, publish, and advocate. In the process, we have come to understand ‘missing matter’ about earlier women as both their experiences and the new knowledge that they developed that has not yet been calibrated as integral to our understanding of the human past. This new knowledge demands a reckoning with the cartography of History itself and the masculinist knowledge-ordering systems that for millennia have kept women’s new discoveries and life experiences from being integrated in the record of our cultural evolution. As we each and all experience keenly, these continue to thwart the business of our lives to reclaim the ‘missing matter’.
